Frequency Regulation

Frequency regulation is reserve capacity that grid operators hold to correct imbalances between generation and consumption and keep grid frequency at its nominal 50 Hz (60 Hz in the US). In Germany, the four transmission system operators procure it in daily auctions. Fast-responding battery storage such as PHENOGY’s can be prequalified for these markets: front-of-the-meter systems directly, with balancing services as one of their revenue streams, and behind-the-meter systems alongside on-site optimization such as peak shaving and PV self-consumption, typically pooled by an aggregator.
