PHENOGY AG has launched PHENOGY 1.0, Europe’s first large-scale battery energy storage system based on sodium-ion technology, in Bremen.

  • Advanced Sodium-Ion Technology: Eco-conscious, sustainable, and engineered for efficient energy storage in a circular economy
  • Future-Readiness: Built to save resources, enhance safety, deliver reliable performance, and stay resilient despite global political changes
  • Designed for versatile and adaptable use across industry, commerce, and mobility infrastructures, ensuring resilience and scalability at all times

PHENOGY AG today launched the PHENOGY 1.0, Europe's first large-scale battery energy storage system (BESS) based on sodium-ion technology, successfully commencing operation in Bremen. The pioneering Swiss energy storage innovator sets a milestone for sustainable storage technologies, paving the way for decentralized, resilient energy supply systems. With this European premiere, PHENOGY marks a significant step forward in environmentally sustainable and geopolitically independent battery storage solutions, supporting the development of a resilient energy supply by facilitating seamless integration with existing infrastructure.

PHENOGY 1.0: Europe’s First Sodium-Ion BESS

PHENOGY 1.0 is a battery energy storage system (BESS) engineered for a broad spectrum of uses in industry, commerce, grid, critical and charging infrastructure. PHENOGY delivers flexible, decentralized storage solutions for dynamic energy needs and active support of renewable energy integration into current grids.

“Our European premiere of the PHENOGY 1.0 in Bremen marks a pivotal moment,” states Peter E. Braun, CEO and Co-Founder of PHENOGY AG. “We are opening new perspectives for next-generation energy storage and making a tangible contribution to transforming our power infrastructure. Our objective is to establish independent, resilient, and responsible energy supply across Europe with a rapidly expanding product portfolio.”

Sodium-Ion Technology: Secure, Sustainable, and Visionary

Sodium-ion technology offers significant advantages over conventional lithium systems. Due to global availability and environmentally sound extraction, sodium provides a sustainable, geopolitically stable resource base. The cell technology stands out for its high thermal stability, minimized fire risk, and robust performance, even under extreme operating conditions. The air-cooled system ensures highly secure and durable energy storage while optimizing its CO₂ footprint. Dr. Max Kory, CTO of PHENOGY, explains: “With cutting-edge sodium-ion technology, we offer energy storage units with long lifespans, enhanced safety features, and reliable performance, even in extreme temperatures. Efficient air cooling underpins the cost-effectiveness and low maintenance of future-ready systems. The PHENOGY 1.0 represents the start of a new generation of battery storage.”

Wide Range of Uses for Resilient Energy Supply

The PHENOGY 1.0 delivers safe and efficient energy storage for companies, industrial parks, residential districts, public institutions, and critical infrastructure. Even during severe weather events or grid failures, it fortifies resilience in an increasingly electrified world. Key applications include:

  • Peak shaving and intelligent self-consumption optimization for cost and CO₂ savings in industry, commerce, and public sectors
  • Microgrids for supplying remote areas, for instance in combination with solar power
  • Emergency power or uninterruptible power supply (UPS) for critical infrastructure like hospitals and data centers
  • Optimization of EV-charging infrastructure
  • Storage solutions for operators of wind and solar parks
  • Applications in enterprises managing critical infrastructure (KRITIS), such as airports, telecommunications, maritime infrastructure, and civil protection

Intelligent energy management systems transform battery storage into dynamic, forward-thinking drivers of the energy transition, actively connecting modular solutions with the grid and empowering the move toward a decentralized, sustainable energy landscape. These integrated systems not only boost flexibility and resilience for communities and industry, but also forge meaningful progress for climate-neutral infrastructure that safeguards future generations.

About PHENOGY

PHENOGY AG, headquartered in Root near Lucerne (Switzerland), develops battery energy storage systems (BESS) based on sodium-ion technology. Founded in 2019, the company is working to make the power supply more decentralized, resilient, and independent, with smart storage systems that prioritize performance, safety, robustness, and recyclability. In doing so, PHENOGY completely eliminates the use of lithium and cobalt and, in the long term, reduces dependence on geopolitically concentrated supply chains in favor of greater energy sovereignty. Today, PHENOGY employs over 60 people at its locations in Root near Lucerne, at PHENOGY Europe GmbH in Bremen (Germany), at PHENOGY Inc. in Columbia, South Carolina (USA), and in Singapore. Its partners include select Fraunhofer Institutes and the University of South Carolina; the company is backed by a broad base of private and institutional investors.

PHENOGY in the Press: Resilient Energy for Armed Forces

Sodium-ion battery storage makes energy supply more resilient: robust in operation and at extreme temperatures, independent of vulnerable supply chains. The military benefits too: in our contribution to the "Future of Defence" supplement, we explain why the technology is ready for the field. The supplement was published in September 2026 in the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung, one of Germany's leading national newspapers (in German).
